What is Foundations?
Adult Basic Literacy—we call it Foundations—is a class for adults who want to learn basic reading, writing, and math. It helps you build the skills you need to find a job, keep a job, join job training, and feel more confident in daily life.
Are these classes free?
Yes! Both classes are offered for free.
Who can take these classes?
You can take the class if you are:
- 18 years or older, and
- Able to show proof of identity and work authorization in the United States.
When and where are classes held?
All of our classes take place in person at the Goodwill Career & Technical Academy.
Do I need to take a test before I start?
Yes, you will take a placement test, but don’t worry.
This is not a pass or fail test. The test helps us understand your English level so we can find the best class for you.

You don’t need to know everything. That’s why you are here—to learn and grow. We are excited to help you.
Can I take the classes if I already have a high school diploma or GED?
Yes—and congratulations!
You can still join the class. Many students have diplomas, degrees, or work experience from other countries.

We will help you build on what you already know.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes. If you attend class and complete the required hours, you will receive a Certificate of Completion.
Can I work while attending classes?
Yes! Our classes are made for busy adults.
We offer flexible schedules to help you manage your job and family.
Many students work full-time or part-time. We will help you find the class time that works for you.
What if I haven’t been in school in a long time?
That’s okay—and very common!
Many of our students haven’t been in school for years—even decades.
We understand it may feel scary, but you’re not alone.

What if I don’t understand everything in class?
You don’t have to understand everything right away.
Learning takes time, practice, and patience.
Everyone learns at a different pace. Making mistakes is normal.
Our teachers will help you. You will also learn by:
